Nicolai’s Truth

The World of Intelligence Intrigue

Lately there has been a lot off attention regarding Russia and its authoritarian regime. We have seen journalists and opposition leaders murdered. That process is not characteristic of just recent Russian history. I have a story from my past which is germane to current events and how we view our world.

Being in graduate school at Duke University working on my Ph.D. was fascinating in so many ways. The South was having a civil rights war, I found myself deep in Duke University Medical Center and I was meeting all manner of fascinating people. Not the least of whom was Nicolai.

One day a new student arrived. He was older than most of us and had a heavy Russian accent. How curious? In time I learned he had been the head of KGB operations for Eastern Europe. One night we fed him ample vodka and he told us about how his life had been as a high level intelligence operative. Like so many people, he considered himself to have been a patriot. But being a patriot of the kind he had been required to be turned out to be a proposition he could not, in the end, suffer. He decided to defect.

Betrayed!

Of course American intelligence was interested and he agreed on a condition. When he went on Radio Free America to announce his defection his wife and children would be picked up by our people and taken out of Russia. We didn’t do it and he lost his family.

Nonetheless he was true to his word partly because he could not accept the moral problems associated with the kind of murderous activities in which he had to be involved. Like other Russians recently working for reform he survived a poisoning with a radioactive substance and came to the United States to study clinical psychology. Interesting choice.

Honor and Truth

He was a touching individual and I never would have guessed his past. He was such a gentle and respectful person with a deep sense of honor. The stories he told us that night were immensely troubling. But his concluding statement about his past in intelligence was one I will never forget. “You think intelligence work is like James Bond. It is in fact like Get Smart.” In case you don’t remember Get Smart, it was a television comedy series about international intrigue. The players on that stage were often inept if not just plain incompetent. Nicolai was speaking a truth.

It was clear he meant the statement and the details of his life bore out his conclusion. What he conveyed was that we often have a view of things which we hold as truth. But truth is illusory and Nicolai’s story was yet another confirmation that we do, indeed, live on the cusp of reality.

What do you think of Nicolai’s conclusion?

A Life Lesson – An Unsuspected Self

Discovery

In a previous post I described an experience I had with a painful sinus condition. For fun I had taken a Tai Chi class and one evening I was in terrible sinus pain and had to sit down. Our instructor, Dell, came over and showed how I could use a Jin Shin Jyutsu flow to dissolve the congestion immediately. A few years later I went to her to work on another problem. It wasn’t particularly serious but she noticed that the energy in the left side of my body was considerably less.

I knew immediately what she was talking about. Twenty years before when I had been in a terrible auto accident the pain was so intense that I crawled into the right hand side of my body and stayed there. The decrease in the energy on my left was the result. With her help I was able to move back to the left. I know that sounds strange but the events were real and the experiences were real.

Depth of Experience

Over the years I found her treatment of various things to be very useful. I took a day long course at one point so I could manage more of it myself. What I have seen is remarkable and It is not widely understood by the medical community or the population in general.

It probably does not sound extreme to say that we animals are energy systems. But what I found astounding was that long ago the energy systems of the body and related energy locks had been mapped. It is impossible to describe it in writing but the systems weave their way through the body with effects at various times of the day and in an array of ways. I asked Dell how they had been able to do this mapping and she said she didn’t know. I have to assume it was done in ancient times when we focused our sensibilities in different way, before we were so cognitively focused.

More Recently

Not long ago I began to have joint and muscle pains which had no cause I could identify. I went to Dell and she went exploring. We did not learn why it had come about just then but she said she could see again the energy withdrawal from the time of the auto accident. She went to work over several sessions and restored the balance and distribution I had been losing. It took time but I am again feeling whole in a variety of ways. I have to assume aging had something to do with it.

A Life Lesson

What the study of medicine has brought us has been important, even crucial, but from what I have seen we have lost some old wisdom and if I describe the process I learned in the world of Jin Shin Jyutzu it is typically rejected out of hand.

But beyond the specific health benefits what this has done for me is to open reception of another form of spirituality of a markedly personal kind. Certainly we have religion but it is often based on certain defined texts and often seems to speak to a set of dicta which too often forecloses the personal exploration or, at times, becomes tyrannical. But what I have sighted goes in an entirely different direction and It is hard to describe what it has meant as I look out into the universe. Science has done wonderful things for us but there is a more personal element which hints at things much beyond the limits of what is usual for an animal species. What I have learned has been fed into my writing of the Gaia’s Majesty series.

Multiple Uses

Let me conclude with a mention of a couple of uses I have found.

Recently I was diagnosed with Afib. It was strongly recommended that I start taking Xarelto. I was absolutely opposed because of my understanding of the risks of unproven big pharma medication. My mother died a terrible death from a condition given to her because of the medication she took.

I understand Afib can be very dangerous. I started taking the blood thinner Nattokinase which is a thousand year old soy based product originating in Japan. It does thin my blood and costs me $240 per year, not $7100 for Xarelto. My decision was not based on money and I understand there is some risk but the other risk was much larger.  Most of my episodes of Afib come at night and wake me up because the heart problem feels like an anxiety attack. I then respond with a Jin Shin flow which stops the attack within a matter of seconds.

Another issue. At times all of us have episodes of waking up at night and can’t get back to sleep. I have a flow for that. I am finding so much safe utility from the Jin Shin Jyutzu system and I am delighted.

Speculative Fiction – Inspiration, Personal Growth and Authrnticity

Focus on Our Personal Meaning

Here is a difficult but intriguing question. What is your personal meaning? In the end the meaning of how the world is must be less important than our exploration of our own reality and meaning. In doing so, speculative fiction may aid us. And that fiction may involve a search through ancient mysteries that may be intriguing as we attend to our own growth and inspiration. One viewpoint is that such a focus is too self centered but if we don’t guide ourselves through self exploration, then we may have no direction at all. Maybe we won’t achieve a transformation but certainly we have to move beyond ourselves at some point and as we do we have to hope we have not lost our way.

The Core of Authenticity

It was very hard for me not to consider existential philosophy while I studied psychology. I found them intertwined. Early existential philosophers believed that their thinking began with the human subject. Woven in were concerns about disorientation if we did not examine ourselves. And, of course, there was the matter of authenticity. But they wondered if it all was merely absurd and at the same time wondered if considerations were too abstract. It helps if there is a direction or an object and that may mean validating our own personal meaning and giving it some substance.

Confession

Now a confession. These decades later I can’t summarize the works of the existentialists. I frequently felt lost in the depth of their thinking and the subtlety of presentation. I’ll leave it to you if you want to pursue the thinking of people like Kierkegaard, Nietzsche and Sartre. But, in the end, the takeaway almost has to be the dedication to building our own view of an authentic self which leads to productive dedication and development. And it is that dedication that is woven into the Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy.

A Little Closer to “Reality”

I think we’ll stay a little closer to ordinary reality which is difficult enough because it can be quite confusing and ephemeral. At one level, though, considering how authentic we are in our daily lives is worth considering. And, in fact, I can’t completely detach psychology from existentialism. Some of us run into more trouble than others as we try to make our way. And some of us turn to literature to do our exploring. Certainly vast areas of literature are helpful and fulfilling. Again it is probably psychology that leads me to science fiction, fantasy and speculative fiction.

The stories writers create are ways of sharing among people the explorations of ourselves, humanity and what our future might hold. These considerations help guide us.

Have you seen works of fiction have large impacts? If so, what works were they?

Who Cares About Reality? Just Live Your Life

Do you find yourself ever considering the meaning of reality?

Inspiration and Personal Growth

It sounds so simple to forge ahead in life and find inspiration and personal growth as it materializes. But we do not proceed that way and there is this thing called planning and preparing for the future.

Inevitably we have dreams and one of the ways we pursue our dreams is to read. My personal choice has always been speculative fiction, fantasy and science fiction. I want to be intrigued and want to explore. Certainly stories of romance can be enchanting but I usually want to explore more deeply. If a romantic story or movie involves the theme of women rising I am strongly engaged. Something amazing is happening for women and for our partnerships and I want to explore it.

Colliding with Reality

Speculation often leads us into a collision with reality and may hint at what is to come. Let me give two examples. George Orwell’s novel 1984 was published in 1949, shortly after World War II. My takeaway from the book was that we should be alert to the coming power of totalitarianism. Certainly his projection of the future was born out in the growth of communism and more recently we can see his themes in the intrusion of information technology and the head of our government. It seems we are never alone.

And then there is Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001 a Space Odyssey (published in 1968). There are fascinating themes but my personal love is Hal, the onboard computer. I don’t know about your experience but I am convinced that Hal or a descendant is alive and living in my computer! How else to explain its behavior.

Interacting with People’s Lives

In my office, interfacing with people about their lives, I could not simply focus on the here and now. I needed to sight where they were going and how that might interact with where we were going as people. The lives of people became a collage of who we are and what was happening to us collectively.

Being free to explore and to be a free spirit is delightful but inevitably we run into what we call reality and what kind of reality is being created around us. The reality of hippiedom in the 1960s and 1970s was engaging and entrancing. And now the reality and richness of computer based games opens whole new worlds.

An Enchanting and Expanding World

For me though, living on the cusp of reality permits a jump from the cusp of reality into a glowing and growing movement in a new world. It’s the exploration which is so exciting and, by the way, I want my partner with me. In the end it is she who especially enriches my world and my life.

Where do you think humankind is headed?

Life Inseparable

Do you “have a life” or did you “get a life”?

What Are We Trying to Say?

When we refer to life what are we talking about?  Are we talking about the body, mind, spirit collectively? Or are we talking about something which is a form of earth energy. We use the word “life” carelessly. At times it is hard to imagine what we are meaning when we use the word. We use it to refer to the form and elements of our existence as well as referring to the underlying process itself.

Rarely do we question what we mean by life. It’s not just a matter of the kind of life we lead. We joke with each other when we tell someone to “get a life”. Clearly they already have one but it is the form of it that is at question. And then there is the matter of the quality of that life. Our life can be highly variable but we will inevitably cling to it regardless.

Groping For Meaning

At the end of the day we do not really know what we mean by life. We can refer to inanimate things as having life or a life span. Such as a light bulb. It may be there is more truth in referring to life in such a context than we ordinarily realize. Certainly a clump of grass has a life as does that insect on the wall. But in other regards we can raise questions.

Does our planet have a life or do we simply refer to it as having a life span? We understand that our sun has a life span and there will come a day when it ceases to have its present form. But we also understand that it has a rhythm to its activity as seen in its more active and quiescent periods. Are those cycles indicative of a life form.

A SearchFor Meaning

Does humanity as a whole have a life span? Will we die out as a life form if we are unwise about our choices? Certainly we can cause death but do we create our death as an organism?

There is much more to the term life than we can believe at one simple level. Our definitions can diminish it or enhance it just as our behavior can diminish or enhance it.

Life Deserves More Attention Than It Gets

Are you still there or did I lose you? What I’m getting at is that the word “life” has a multitude of layers of meanings. But one of the things I came to in writing the Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy is that we seem to suspect we are not alone. Of course most religions have such a belief but there is another level. It may be a matter of imagination, projection of feeling, or a recognition that there are so many different kinds of life forms. But, as I wrote, I kept coming back to the feeling that in this kind of story lay the perception that there are a multitude of other life forms which may be quite sentient and intelligent. But it may be a matter that we simply cannot ordinarily perceive them much less communicate with them. One of the wonderful things about telling a story is that it is possible for the author to rectify that problem.

What are your beliefs about life?
