A Crisis Turning Point

A New and Terrible Crisis

Have we reached the crisis turning point for America? With each crisis previously it seemed we might face a major problem but the corrupt leaders in our government blocked it time and time again. Will they be able to do it again or will the American people arise.

Seeking a Focus and Direction

After the recent tragedies it is clear we have to face the issues for what they are. One of the things being proposed is that we have what is called “red flag” legislation That means we would be alerted to unstable people so there could be intervention and prevention. It is also proposed that we have improved mental health services.

Not Primarily a Mental Health Issue

We need improved mental health services but mental health is not the central issue. Psychologist Here!  What we are seeing is a country beset by racism and corruption. As to the racism, the fundamentals are social issues, not mental health issues.

Take a look at what happened to Germany in the twentieth century. Due to a variety of unfortunate errors and circumstances they were led into war and a terrible defeat in World War I. The prevailing powers failed to respond with the need to help them recover to a stable form of government. The ongoing suffering was terrible and led to the rise of Naziism. The people of Germany had been victimized and it led to even more carnage.

A Markedly Authoritarian and Unstable President

In this country we must face the reality of our circumstances and this is not a mental health crisis. Surely we need to pay attention to unstable individuals but our first view needs to be of a president who is unstable, deeply pathological and is validly described as a Narcissistic Sociopath. He is supported by corrupt people around him and in his party. The president is seeking to drive us into an authoritarian state for his own personal benefit.

Facing Social Issues and Corruption

It must be emphasized that the instability and racism we are seeing is a social phenomenon. Humans are social creatures and can be herded into this type of malfunction and we must face it for what it is. The corruption must be dealt with and we need to combat social malfunction leading to violence and racist outbursts. People need to be educated and guided as we build relationships that will lead us to a better day.

We have a lot of work to do. The Republican Party I grew up in has been replaced by a corrupt party. The fact is we need a functional two party system. At present we are down to one. The work ahead will be difficult but must be done. With an unstable America the world is in jeopardy.

A Focus on Transformation

Stunning Alternatives

Recently I mentioned that while this blog is titled Cusp of Reality that I’m redirecting it more to the issue of transformation. I need to explain what that means.

I’ve been on this earth awhile and certainly I’ve seen periods of crisis and turns toward productive development. But I’ve never seen the potential for the development of such vastly different transformations.

America in Crisis

I know I’m writing a blog about the cusp of reality and now am directing it  toward transformation. While part of my endeavor presently is to promote my Gaia’s Majesty series, in its development the issue of transformation has emerged. At this moment, I’m being led to comment on my view of the crisis America finds itself in. The news is dominated by the issues we see in our government. In the commentary it is repeated over and over that almost everything is about politics. I fundamentally disagree.

A brilliant old man I took classes from when I was in college talked about culture and things such as cultural flow. His illumination shines on what we are seeing presently.

The kind of crisis we are enduring is not the product of a single election. This is a welling up of culture and various associated processes. We have opened a view of undercurrents and differing groups within our society. These groups did not materialize overnight. They were there all along but were often hidden from our sight.

World Transformation

America’s crisis is weighing heavily on what is happening in the world. Since World War II America  has been a stabilizing influence. Now, with an unstable and deeply pathological narcissistic president we have not just abandoned the world but are feeding its deterioration.

Not long ago we had the hope of the Arab Spring and saw blossoming regimes in Europe. Now the Middle East is in dire conflict with our government contributing. We are seeing instability in such places as Great Britain, France, Italy, Poland with other tremors across Europe.

Shortly It may be that burgeoning conflict of a level not seen since World War II will appear. The processes leading to World War I and World War II were not the product of careful design but of forces out of control. It seems we are at such a time again.

Transformation of America

What we see in our country is not a pretty sight. We are floundering and it is clear that there is a very strong element of corruption operating in both government and business. For decades now there has been a deterioration which has led us away from solving problems as our culture changed and we are entering a stressful world with rapid technological change.

What is happening is not just politics although there are political tremors. Much of it is cultural upwelling and rapid change in which we are not in charge. Even though many of the effects may be seen in the political realm there are many other elements of note.

One of them is the stunning movement to empower women at last. I watch in awe as bright, determined women appear before us. At last we are coming to see the significant potential in half our population and it breeds wonder and hope-as well as opposition.

As positive elements flower they bring with them attention to factors in our lives which are of great import. We are coming to understand that we need to attend to change among men, defining a future for the people we call the left behinds, long overdue reform of our health care system, climate change (114 degrees in Paris this week)  and on and on.

These few themes and items noted are merely part of the flood nationally. Ahead I will be selecting some of them for more detailed comment.

Choice Point

These are the huge choice points we will select for transformation. Will we abet the decline of world relationships to lead us deep into terrible world crisis or will we face our own dilemmas, work for constructive problem solving and turn the corner to renew our stabilizing influence in the world? We will see shortly.

Gaia’s Majesty-Challenge

Who We Are, Versus Who We Think We Are

A Challenge for Each of Us

Our personal identity is a constant challenge for each of us at all levels. We have to assume an identity in order to function but, in fact, we may have a very different identity from that assumed by other people. On a day by day basis we can’t trouble ourselves with these matters. Why would we? So we make an assumption and forge ahead.

The fact is that most of the time we probably think not at all about issues of identity unless we are challenged or face a problem. Sooner or later there will come an event when someone will ask “Who the hell do you think you are?” The question may mean the person is offended by a position we have taken or it may be a more fundamental challenge. If it is the latter then we truly are challenged.

Our Personal Identity

And sometimes we are perfectly clear about who we are but are in hiding. Others may think they know us but do not. There may be a fundamental mixture of comfort and pain.

Now, with these questions, if you are confused or feel lost then you thoroughly understand why we do not dwell on such questions most of the time. It is only at crisis point that we must attend.

And Then One Day…

And writers of fiction often come to the point where they wonder who their characters really are or where they came from. One of the reasons to have an outline and a firm understanding of the story is that it keeps us focused rather than letting us get lost in a fantasy related to a character’s identity or our own identity. Or is that the point of writing fiction? Can we expand our world and our identity? Are we often asking questions we want to explore.

Different Kinds of Meaning

The fact is that we who write fiction are almost surely not simply engaging in an interesting exercise or a labor of love. It seems likely that our engagement goes much deeper. As a psychologist I know that what we are doing is often a reflection of our personality. Those of us who engage in speculation and fantasy are different creatures from the people who focus on the glory of the turn of the phrase. In my dissertation I sought to answer the question “does the painter’s work reflect his personality?” The literature was full of unfounded psychoanalytic speculation.

But Carl Jung gave us a magnificent personality typology free of bias and authority. I found the personality of the painter was clearly displayed in his work. In discussing my dissertation results with artists I could see their focus and how their personality identity shaped their work. A study with writers would probably uncover some interesting differences. As I step back and look at the characters in my Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy I see a melange of parts of me, people I would like to know and layers of identity issues.

What do you see when you take this viewpoint into the act of creation?
